We had Teada here before, in Feb. 2003 and they were outstanding. Since then, you may have seen them at the Kansas City Irish Fest last Labor Day Weekend. They were awarded the title of "Newcomers of the Year 2003" in the Irish Music Magazine Awards, voted on by readers, and they were nominated for album of the year 2004 by Irish Music Magazine.
When they were here in 2003, they also visited 3 schools the day after their
show. There is a review of the concert and photos from the school visits here:
http://www.moceltic.org/past-concerts/teada.html
Please take a moment to have a look.
Since then, they've added accordionist Paul Finn to their lineup and John Blake recently left the group and is replaced by flutist Damian Stenson.
We're very, very pleased to have them coming back to Columbia on this tour.
Fortunate for us that we're halfway between Tulsa and Racine, WI! Please plan
to attend if you can!

2005 SUMMER CELTIC ARTS PROGRAM
For the fifth year (can you believe it??!) we will have an Irish college student here as an artist-in-residence for the summer to teach Irish music and dance. Sinead Fahey (Shin-ade' Fahh'-hee) is a music education student at University College Cork who has been playing traditional music and dancing since she was big enough to hold a tin whistle. Her main instrument is the Irish flute and she also plays tin whistle, mandolin, tenor banjo, button accordion, bodhran and piano. She is close to achieving her professional Irish dance teacher certification; she teaches all forms of traditional dance -- step dance, set and sean nos styles. Sinead will be here in Columbia from June 2 to August 12.
Below is a preliminary list of classes she will be offering. It would be very helpful if people who may be interested taking classes could e-mail me with your interest and your current proficiency level/experience so I can get a feel for which classes will have adequate enrollment to be viable. This is not a commitment until you actually register for the class.
The schedule is not final, but classes will be held in Columbia weekly on Monday or Tuesday nights, for 9 weeks beginning June 6 and running until the week of Aug 8 (omitting the week of July 4).
Classes for adults/teens:
- Tin whistle and Irish flute for Beginners
- Tin whistle and Irish flute for Improvers
- Irish style mandolin and tenor banjo
- Beginning bodhran (Irish drum)
- Button accordion for beginners and improvers (NOTE: we have 2 accordions to
rent to students)
- Irish language and culture (basic conversational Irish plus discussions of
Irish culture - good preparation for traveling to Ireland)
- Beginning set dancing (social dancing) - no partner needed - if you ever took
one of our set dance classes before but need a refresher, or if you have never
done any social dancing but would like to give it a try, this is for you.
- Sean nos (old style) dancing - this is a solo dance style rather than group
dances, but not as athletic as step dancing. Feet stay low to the ground,
emphasizing rhythm and foot percussion. Una taught this for the first time for
us last year
For children 5 - 14
- Irish tin whistle and step dancing - Tuesdays and Thursdays for 4 weeks
during the day - tentative dates, July 19 - Aug 11.
More details will be posted on the web site in the next few days. Again, please e-mail me if you are interested in enrolling in any of these classes or have questions. It will be helpful in finalizaing the schedule.

Irish band FLOOK will play in St. Louis at The Focal Point Friday night May 6 and in Kansas City at Missouri Valley Folk Life on Saturday night May 7. Saturday venue is The Polsky Theater, Carlson center, Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd., OP, Kansas.
Flook is an amazingly creative and extremely energetic foursome featuring flutes, whistles, bodhran and guitar. Flute and whistle players Sarah Allen and Brian Finnegan are highly innovative musicians who are clearly rooted in Irish traditional music, but their original compositions tickle the edges of many other genres and their musicianship is second to none.
I love this band. Go see them if you can. I'm sorry they aren't coming to Columbia this time around... I'll try to get them here next time.
