Workshops

Introductory Irish Gaelic with  Claire O'Gorman

Beginning Tuesday June 19, this workshop will run for 8 weeks.
Tuesdays, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Location is tentatively set for Calvary Episcopal Church fellowship hall, corner of Locust & 9th Streets in Columbia.
Fee -- $65.

Visiting Irish student Claire O'Gorman has just completed her 3rd year of study in Irish language and history. She will instruct participants in the basic conversational  Gaelic,  as well as the structure of the language and historical  and cultural aspects to put the language into context of modern day Ireland. On you're next visit to Ireland you'll be able to foray confidently into the Gaeltacht -- Gaelic speaking -- areas of the country!

Step Dancing with Leela and Ellie Grace

Beginning mid-June. Cost, location and times have not been determined yet.

This will be an introductory level Irish step dancing class for beginners of all ages. Step dancing is fairly athletic, solo percussive dancing -- think "Riverdance."

Weekly Set-Dancing with Christine Harker

Beginning in September.

Set-dancing is one of the ancestors of American square- and contra-dance.  Four couples form a "set" who dance together executing various figures in sequences that form a complete dance. Some of the dances go back over a century and are still very commonly danced in pubs across Ireland.

If you are interested in participating in any of these workshops, send an e-mail to Kate Akers kakers@chivalry.com.  For the Gaelic and Step Dancing workshops, tell me what evening of the week is best for you?
