KOPN 98.5 FM is the only radio station in mid-Missouri with a locally-produced weekly Celtic music show. Carol Goodnick has been hosting "Strike the Gay Harp" every Sunday afternoon from 3 - 5 p.m. for more years than she'll admit. Besides playing an excellent mix of traditional music from the Celtic nations, Carol is very knowledgeable about the genre, sharing lots of interesting background information about the music and its ties to seasonal traditions, culture and history of the people.

That's just one great reason for supporting KOPN, which is a community-owned, listener supported radio station; one of only about 30 of its ilk in the USA. (But you probably knew that already!)  There are two concerts coming up that are benefit concerts to raise money for KOPN.  Neither are Celtic music, but they are close cousins. You can learn more about KOPN and how it came to be at www.kopn.org

Sunday, October 20, 7:00 p.m.
KOPN benefit concert: The Reedy Buzzards -- Acoustic American Music
Traditional country, gospel, old-time, great harmonies and mighty fine pickin'!
Cherry Street Artisan, corner of Ninth and Cherry Streets
$10 at the door (kids 14 & under attend free)

This is a return visit for The Reedy Buzzards, who played at the Big Muddy Folk Festival in 2001.

The Reedy Buzzards formed in 1992 to evoke a rare moment in American music in the late 1930s, when traditional styles came together to flow as one river and create American popular music on radio. The first decades of the last century will long be heralded as the blossom of American music.

“The Reedy Buzzards plow the fertile fields of traditional American acoustic music, played and sung with heartfelt, salt-of-the-earth simplicity… Here is music from a time of innocence.”
–Ann Arbor Observer

Saturday October 26, 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, October 27, 7:30 p.m.
CMCAA Concert: Navan
  a cappella Celtic harmonies

Sacred Heart Catholic Church (corner of Waugh and Locust in Columbia. Here's a map

The acoustics in Sacred Heart are excellent, and it is planned that Navan will perform without amplification so we can enjoy the natural sound of their lovely voices and harmonies.

Navan is a four-person a cappella vocal group who sing in the Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Manx and Breton languages. Choosing a repertoire of seldom-heard songs in seldom heard languages, Navan offers a sampling of some nearly-extinct song traditions. Because the Celtic languages developed as oral languages, with little or no writing until Christian monks began recording the oral histories, these languages have a natural rhythm and poetic quality that is especially evident in the songs.

During their performances, Navan explain the songs and their origins, and often combine different versions of the songs they’ve researched, sometimes singing in the Sean Nos solo voice style, but more often adding rich 4-part harmonies that will send chills down your spine!
